UCC Medfield Outreach Programs
Outreach encourages sponsors and supports the hands-on involvement by our church members who want to volunteer in both secular and religious organizations. Youth and family mission trips currently receive the largest allocation of our resources. We have recently become involved with the Habitat for Humanity organization as well.
Blood Drive
Each year, in response to the ongoing need for blood donations, the Community and World Service sponsors a blood drive to aid the American Red Cross Blood Services.
Christmas Projects
UCC Medfield responds generously to the call for Christmas gifts for The Giving Tree which provides individual gifts at Christmas for those groups that we serve. We also collect for the Medfield Food Cupboard and the Friends for the Mentally Ill at Christmas time.
Habitat for Humanity
www.habitat.org
A world-wide program, Habitat helps low income families in need of shelter to build their own homes in a cooperative effort with volunteers and to purchase these homes with a no-interest mortgage. UCC Medfield has recently begun a relationship with this organization and is currently planning a trip to El Salvador in February as well as organizing work days in Massachusetts locations.
Youth Mission Trip
Each year, for the past six years, the Senior High Fellowship group has participated in a summer mission trip. In June 2004, 30 youth and 5 adults traveled to Pine Ridge, a Lakota Reservation in Pine Ridge, South Dakota and partnered with YouthWorks!, a Christian youth ministry organization, to repair homes and provide a summer Bible school program for children. In June 2005, 26 youth and 4 adults worked at a food bank, a homeless facility and a soup kitchen in Washington, DC. In July of 2006, 26 youth and 4 adults traveled to Houma, LA to help in this hurricane-ravaged area. These powerful, faith-shaping opportunities are a blessing for all involved. We are grateful for God's guidance and for the congregation's on-going support of these mission trips! On a monthly basis throughout the school year, Senior High students participate in local mission work through UCC Medfield’s Soup To Go ministry.
Family Mission Trip
For the past several years, an intergenerational group from UCC Medfield has participated in a yearly mission trip. In 2003, 15 adults and youth traveled to Barbour County, WVA under the auspices of World Vision to help build a community center. In July of 2004, ten adults and youth traveled to the same location as the senior high group and built a handicapped ramp for a resident of the reservation and in 2005, 19 adults and teens traveled to Puerto Rico to assist a new congregation in the construction of its church. In September of 2006, 12 adults will journey to the Gulf Coast area to help rebuild homes devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
Soup To Go
This ministry prepares and delivers homemade soup, sandwiches, drinks and much needed personal items to the homeless in downtown Boston two to three Saturdays a month. Participants who volunteer to cook gather at the church at 3:30 PM for a couple of hours. Deliverers meet at 5:45 PM, caravan together into Boston and normally return around 10:00 PM. No prior experience is needed! During the school year, the Senior High Fellowship coordinates one Saturday a month and the other two Saturdays are manned by intergenerational groups. Current schedules for Soup to Go may be found on our News and Calendars Page or check the Youth Ministry Page for a current list of Youth Soup to Go dates.
