Glen Workshop Update

I discovered that there are approximately 200 people in attendance at the Glen Workshop. When I went to my first poetry workshop on Monday, I was blown away by the level of competece that those in the workshop have. After the first half hour we started sharing our own work, and I was second to share.  Let’s just say that while the critique of the class and leader were kind, it was still humbling.  The five or so who shared after me were very good poets.  I was pretty discouraged after the workshop was over.

However, Andy Crouch gave an excellent keynote address about blocks to creativity on Monday evening and by this morning I had gone through an attitude adjustment and went to the class in better spirits. There was more variety in the level of skill displayed in poems today, although they were still at a considerably higher level than I am able to write at present. But I did learn a lot. This afternoon I had some free time and went into Santa Fe and went to the Georgia O'Keeffe museum which was excellent. I also went to the Indian Art Museum which was interesting. One observation: I am amazed at how few tourists there are here at the height of tourist season. A waiter at a restaurant I went to said that tourism is way down. A lot of stores have few if any customers inside. (Starbucks seems pretty busy, though.) I imagine in good financial times the streets are full of people.
