Another Day at the Glen Workshop
At today’s workshop I was one of the six who presented a poem. Once again people were kind in their critique and i received some helpful information. I have learned a lot from the workshop just hearing the class and the instructor critique the poems being presented. I suspect that more than half the class has had some of their poems published. I feel like such a rookie—it feels a bit overwhelming. On the other hand, I have a lot of new information that i can begin to sift through.
In the afternoon I went to the brand new (in the last three months) New Mexico History Museum. It is a great museum and I learned a lot about the history of New Mexico. A few facts that I learned: New Mexico was settled in 1598, and Santa Fe was settled in 1610, so they will be celebrating their 400th year anniversary next year. New Mexico was on the side of the Union during the Civil War and there were several battles fought here in 1862 when a Confederate Army invaded from Texas. The last battle fought not too far from Santa Fe was a draw, but the Union army was able to destroy the Confederate supply lines so they withdrew back into Texas, never to invade again. Kit Carson lived in New Mexico as did Billy the Kid. Tomorrow is a day the conference has set aside so people can spend the day sight-seeing, so I will be heading to Taos which is about 70 miles north of here.
