Class Info & Curriculum
We will continue to use the Rock Solid curriculum by Cokesbury as our primary guide for kindergarten through second grade and fifth grade classes. Rock Solid: Building a Heart of Faith engages young hearts and minds with age-appropriate multi-sensory activities, stories, and games, all designed to give children an opportunity to know God through Jesus and experience life-changing transformation. Rock Solid is a relationship-building faith journey, developing:
- A child's personal connection to God as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ
- Friendships among children
- Bonds between parents, leaders and children.
Our preschool students will continue to use the Boz's Teach Me, Show Me. Grow Me curriculum that is published by David C. Cook. Through their trusted bear friend Boz, preschoolers will discover God, discover Jesus, and discover the Bible!!
Our fourth grade students will be use a curriculum called Teaching Children Bible Basics as they prepare to receive their gift Bibles on October 17th. After this year-long focus, students will have gained a working knowledge of the structure of the Bible, the organization of the books of the Bible, and the significance of the Bible to Christians.
Our third grade class and multi-age class at the 11:00 Praise Service will be using a curriculum by Cokesbury called Live Big. This Bible-based curriculum is designed to excite and enrich our children's spiritual lives by bringing every day, real world experience to Sunday School. and will help them see, hear and live their Belief In God. Short video segments bring faith-filled, high energy excitement with characters who model B.I.G. behavior. Each month has a theme, a "B.I.G. Idea" and a Bible Memory verse. Lessons include a Bible story, DVD segment, activities to immerse and connect the children in the Bible story, and ends with closing worship and prayer. Every Live B.I.G. lesson is based on three big truths:
- God is a great big God
- God loves us with a great big love
- We are part of God's great big world.
Class Information
Nursery/Toddler Program
Nursery care is available at both services for children up to three years old. Judy Lorantos begins her seventh year with us this fall as our nursery caregiver and will provide consistent care for our youngest attendees. In addition to Judy, we have a group of middle school and high school students who serve in the nursery as well. Parents may be asked to volunteer in the nursery if additional help is needed.
All nursery/toddler parents will receive a Nursery/Toddler Parent Handbook. It outlines all the policies and procedures at UCC to ensure a safe and caring nursery ministry. Parents are asked to fill out a nursery registration form that is kept on file in the nursery/toddler room. Safety of our youngest attendees is our top priority and we have strict check-in and dismissal procedures. At drop-off, parents are given a silent pager that we can activate from the nursery if the parent is needed during worship. In addition, this pager MUST be presented at dismissal to release your child. Given the nursery is an appealing play space; it tends to attract youth as well as unsupervised children. It is our intention to keep the nursery as a clean and safe place for our smallest attendees. Therefore, the nursery will be locked when it is not being used on Sunday morning, by the MOMs groups, or other authorized times.
Children's Church
Since we launched Children's Church in October 2007, this worship service has captivated the hearts of our students (and their teachers too!!!) and has given many students the opportunity to be a worship leader. We will restart Children's Church on October 3, 2010 and wiill continue this service on the first Sunday of the month through June. All students are asked to gather (except nursery/toddlers) in the Great Room at 9:30 for this 20 minute worship service. We sing lively praise songs, pray, receive our offerings and listen to a short message before heading off to class. Parents are NOT expected to stay with their children during this worship time.
Preschool - 9:30 Service
Teachers are in the classrooms from 9:20 a.m. each Sunday morning (except the first Sunday of the month where children report directly to the Great Room) to greet the children. Classes start at 9:30 a.m. and continues until worship is over. Parents MUST pickup their children at the classrooms at the conclusion of the service.
Kindergarten-5th Grade - 9:30 Service
Children in kindergarten through 5th grade who attend the 9:30 morning worship with their parents are dismissed to Sunday School after the Children's Message (except on the first Sunday of the month when they report directly to the Great Room). Class time runs till 10:30 a.m.
Children up to 3rd grade must be picked up by their parents at their classrooms. We strongly encourage all parents to pick up each child but leave it up to the parent's discretion for the 4th and 5th graders. Please be mindful that your children's safety in and around the building is one of our biggest priorities.
Multi-age - 11:00 Service
Children whose families worship at the 11:00 Praise Service will be invited to join their parents in the Great Room at the beginning of worship. Children will be dismissed to a multi-age Sunday School classroom prior to the sermon for a regular length Sunday School class. This class is piloting the Live B.I.G. curriculum this fall.
