UCC Medfield is pleased to introduce a new church symbol and logo!

The work to create a new logo started in the summer of 2009 when Pastor Phil initiated conversations with Wendy Wirsig, a member of the congregation and a professional graphic artist, about developing a logo for the church that captures the essence and mission of the congregation. Wendy accepted the challenge and after much prayer came up with a design which she shared with Phil, the staff, and with the church board. Everyone engaged in thoughtful reflection about the initial design and Wendy then took what she had heard and tried to incorporate it into the logo. After several iterations over a year she proposed a design that everyone felt captured the church.

The creation of a new logo happens infrequently in the life of a church and the launch this fall signifies a desire to better communicate our faith and mission. The use of Christian symbols goes back to the formation of the early church. Rituals, religious texts and especially works of art bring forth reminders of compelling ideals and stories. The empty cross which we sit before in worship is the most important symbol of our Christian faith connecting us as a community and eliciting within us emotions and thoughts that connect us with Christ.

The new church symbol is designed to frame the many dimension of UCC Medfield. It begins with a tall cross symbolizing Christ’s resurrection and reign above all. Within the cross are images that represent the multi-faceted aspects of the church: colored areas symbolize the continual movement of God’s spirit within us, the earth represents our missions and relationships throughout the world, the dove represents the Holy Spirit as well as peace and love, the G Clef represents the artistic dimensions of the church and that we are called to use God’s gifts to bring beauty and joy to the world, the small cross represents the faith we carry into everything we do as Christians, and the ladle and soup bowl represent a call to broad missions in the community and world.

In the end, there was almost unanimous agreement on the design making it clear that God and the Holy Spirit were there, guiding us in the direction we needed to go.

Hopefully, this symbol will draw hearts and minds closer to the Church and Christ whenever it is seen and serve its purpose of creating a starting point for the dimensions of who we are and what we can become.

Special thanks to Wendy who took on and succeeded in this special request from the church.
